Climate Action Is Now Required for B Corps
Under B Lab’s previous standards, measuring your emissions earned points but wasn’t required to certify. The new B Lab Standards make Climate Action a required topic for every B Corp.
Recertifications on the new standards began in January 2026, and new certifications in March 2026. What you need depends on your size.
Larger B Corps
- Measure Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions every year and publish the totals
- Have the inventory verified by an accredited third party
- Set science-based targets for Scopes 1, 2 and 3, validated by SBTi or verified by a third party
- Publish a transition plan and report progress against it
Smaller B Corps
- Publish a climate action plan with measurable targets aligned with 1.5°C
- Have the plan approved by your board or other governing body
- Report progress on the plan publicly from Year 3
- No GHG inventory required, though it makes your targets far more credible
B Lab sets your size by the lower of your annual revenue or number of workers. Your scoping memo in B Impact confirms which requirements apply to you.
Your Inventory Comes First
For larger B Corps, the GHG inventory is needed from the start of certification. Your targets, transition plan and progress reports are all built on it.
Starting early gives you time to fill data gaps and complete verification before your recertification date.

Our team gathers your activity data, checks it line by line and calculates your emissions across every scope. Because we’re an accredited verification body, we know what a verifier will look for, and we build your inventory to stand up to that review.
Scope 1, 2 and 3 Inventory
A complete annual inventory covering every scope, as larger B Corps now need.
Scope 3 Categories Documented
We screen all 15 Scope 3 categories and record which ones are included or excluded, and why.
Scope 2 Both Ways
Market-based and location-based results, so you can disclose both as B Lab requires.
Ready for Verification
A clear record of your data, methods and assumptions for the independent verifier to review.
A Baseline for Your Targets
A solid base year to build science-based targets and your transition plan on.
Numbers for Smaller B Corps
Not required to measure? An inventory still gives your climate action plan real numbers to work from.
How It Works
Three simple stages from first call to a finished, verification-ready report.
Send Us Your Data
We agree the scope with you, then you share your fuel, energy and supplier data.

Common Questions about B Corp Climate Requirements
Does Every B Corp Need a GHG Inventory Now?
No. Larger B Corps must measure their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions every year and have the inventory verified by an accredited third party. Smaller B Corps need a public climate action plan with measurable targets instead. An inventory isn’t required for them, but it gives the plan a reliable starting point.
When Do the New Climate Requirements Apply?
When you certify or recertify on the new B Lab Standards. Recertifications on the new standards began in January 2026, and new certifications in March 2026. Larger B Corps need their inventory from Year 0, science-based targets and a transition plan from Year 3, and public progress reports from Year 5.
Does Scope 3 Have to Be Included?
For larger B Corps, yes. The inventory has to cover Scopes 1, 2 and 3, and you need to document which Scope 3 categories are included and excluded. Scope 2 results are disclosed both market-based and location-based.
How Does B Lab Decide Our Company Size?
B Lab uses the lower of your annual revenue or your number of workers. Your scoping memo in B Impact shows your size category and the requirements that apply to you.
Who Verifies the Inventory?
B Lab requires an accredited third party that is independent of whoever prepared the data. We build your inventory with a full record of data, methods and assumptions, so it’s ready for that review.
